It is a location-based feature, and you can collect items such as seeds, materials, boxes and chests when exploring your surroundings. You can also tap on your companion’s icon to throw a ball and it will help collect items along the direction of where the ball goes.

Playing with GPS is recommended, but it is absolutely not necessary. You can always play with it off and just use your companion to grab things within reach. That’s how we play it from home!
